About this work

“My latest collection is a continuation of my art practice, which is largely based around a sort of misplaced nostalgia. I draw a lot of influence from design references from the latter half of the 20th century, mainly through retro interior design books and film and TV sets. I love the futuristic nature of some of those references, and viewing them through a contemporary lens creates a weird displacement which is a founding concept of my shapes: they’re to simultaneously fit everywhere and nowhere at the same time.”

“Earlier this year in Piemonte, Italy, I created the pieces Piemonte 2, 3 and 4 whilst spending time looking at 20th century Italian furniture and interior design, using that as a springboard into sketching shapes for the pieces in this collection. Using my sketches as a starting point, I hand-build using a coiling technique and build my pieces from the bottom up, usually from grogged stoneware to create an earthy, natural texture.”

The artist

Annabel Cucuz

Annabel Cucuz is a sculptor based in Manchester, best known for her curved ceramic forms. The artist predominantly takes influence from 20th-century design, referencing nostalgic interior styles from 70s and 80s pop culture and films. Collecting visual inspiration from vintage interior design books, her sculptures echo the shapes and scenes she discovers in her research.

“My sculptural forms were created from this visual research and subsequently filled sketchbooks, playing on the idea of being able to disguise themselves into any interior whilst

being able to hold onto a feeling of nostalgia. They exist in the visual in-between.”
