About this work
In her recent body of work, Gummed Together, Mnguni explores the ideas around attachment in the family unit. These works explore the family ties, bonds and expectations that come from growing up in a large immigrant family. The work also nods to the hand cut application of the abstracted figures, the process in which each character is drawn, cut and stuck down using adhesive. These exaggerated forms and lines represent the imagined and lived memories of the artist.

Siphiwe Mnguni
Siphiwe Mnguni is a British-Zimbabwean multi-disciplinary artist and photographer based in southeast London. Known for her figurative mixed-media portraits, Mnguni’s work combines drawing, hand-cut collage and textiles – centring the black experience and particularly the iconography of black women.
